How to choose a mattress protector?
At night, you forget it is there: well fitted, supple and pleasant to the touch, it keeps things hygienic without compromising the comfort of your bed.
At Serenis, you choose between four models: Pure, Essential, Protect and Thermo.
THE FIRST QUESTION
Waterproof or absorbent?
The choice depends on your needs: heavy sweating, young children, breakfast in bed. Two families answer these situations, and our four models are split between them.
-
Absorbent Fabric only
- The fabric absorbs sweat and light moisture, then goes in the wash. Nothing comes between the sheet and the mattress: it is the most breathable and the quietest protection. However, a spilt glass can soak through it. Pure
A waterproof mattress protector will not necessarily make you sweat: how it feels depends as much on the surface fabric, the thinness of the membrane, the sheet and the mattress as on the waterproofing itself. That is why our three waterproof models do not use the same material.
THE FOUR MODELS
Which one is right for you?
The material changes two things above all: how it feels, and how moisture is handled. Here is what each model offers, and who it is for.
-
Pure
- 100% organic cotton molleton, 210 g/m² Soft, natural and absorbent. The only model in the range without a membrane — and the quietest. Choose Pure if you mainly want cotton, absorbency and silence, with no need for a barrier against liquids.
-
Essential
- Cotton and TENCEL™ Lyocell jersey Soft, smooth and fluid, with a cooler feel under the fitted sheet. The membrane protects the mattress from liquids. Choose Essential for waterproof protection that feels soft, supple and cooler.
-
Protect
- 100% cotton jersey, BI-OME® technology The honest feel of cotton. BI-OME® reduces the activity of odour-causing bacteria for up to 40 washes at 60 °C. Waterproof. Choose Protect if you prefer cotton and also want long-lasting waterproof protection.
-
Thermo
- HeiQ Smart Temp™ polyester jersey Supple and quick-drying, designed to draw moisture to the surface when your body temperature rises. Waterproof on all five sides. Choose Thermo if you tend to get hot at night and also want waterproofing.
SIZES
The right size, the right depth
For length and width, choose the same size as your mattress: a 160 × 200 cm mattress needs a 160 × 200 cm mattress protector.
Then there is the depth. On a fitted-sheet design, the skirt is the part that runs down the sides and tucks under the mattress. It must be deep enough for the protector to stay in place without pulling at the corners.

- 32 cm skirt
- For mattresses up to 27 cm deep.
- 40 cm skirt — extra deep
- For mattresses up to 35 cm deep.
If you use a topper and want to cover it together with the mattress, measure the total depth of both. For a boat, van or motorhome mattress, an adjustable bed, a round mattress or any unusual size, Serenis makes made-to-measure protectors: note the length, width and depth, then write to us. For a particular shape, a sketch or template may be requested depending on the project.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an underpad and a mattress protector?
In shops, the two terms often refer to the same family of products. What matters most is whether the protection is absorbent or waterproof, what it is made of and its shape.
Which mattress protector if I sweat a lot?
If you are mainly looking for absorbency and the feel of cotton, Pure is a natural choice. If you also want a waterproof barrier, Essential or Thermo will suit you better, depending on how sensitive you are to heat.
Which mattress protector for a child?
If there is a real risk of little accidents, choose a waterproof model. Essential, Protect and Thermo protect the mattress against liquids.
Is a waterproof mattress protector noisy?
Not necessarily. The noise depends on the membrane and how it is bonded to the fabric. Serenis favours thin, supple protectors. Pure, which has no membrane, remains the obvious choice if silence is your priority.
Which size for a 180 × 200 cm mattress?
A 180 × 200 cm mattress protector — then check the depth of your mattress to choose the right skirt.
Can I use a mattress protector with a topper?
Yes. If you want to cover both together, add the depth of the mattress to that of the topper before choosing the skirt depth.
How do I care for a mattress protector?
It should be washable on a regular basis. The temperature depends on the model, its material and whether it has a membrane or a finish: follow the care label of the product you chose. After a spill, wash the protector as soon as possible. A protector that is washed and dried properly will keep its comfort for longer.
