How to choose the right mattress protector

A mattress protector is not something to choose at random. Behind an identical appearance — a white rectangle shaped like a fitted sheet — lie very different constructions, which do not solve the same problems. Here is how to find your way.

Start with the right question

Most guides start with the material. You should do the opposite: start from what bothers you today. Each protector in the Serenis range was designed around one specific concern.

“I want to protect my mattress without feeling it”

This is the most common need: keeping a mattress safe from stains and wear, without changing anything about its comfort. Cotton and TENCEL™ Lyocell jersey is made for exactly that. The cotton brings natural softness, the Lyocell a silky touch and a feeling of freshness. The whole thing stays waterproof thanks to a polyurethane backing, while remaining thin, supple and silent under the fitted sheet.

That is the choice of Essential.

“Hygiene and odours are what worry me”

Bedding builds up heat, moisture and sweat: an environment that suits the bacteria behind unpleasant odours. If that is your main concern — a child's room, night sweats, a spare room that is rarely aired — you need an active treatment built into the fibre.

BI-OME® technology reduces the activity of these bacteria by more than 99%, with effectiveness maintained for up to 40 washes at 60 °C. That is the choice of Protect, in 100% cotton.

“I don't want to sleep on plastic”

Many sleepers dislike the feel of a membrane: the faint rustle with every movement, the sense of trapped heat. There is another way to protect a mattress: not by waterproofing it, but by absorbing.

A thick 210 g/m² molleton in GOTS-certified organic cotton absorbs everyday moisture while letting air circulate. No membrane, so no noise and no plastic feel. That is the choice of Pure, particularly suited to sensitive skin.

Worth knowing: without a membrane, this protector will not stop a spilt liquid the way the other three would. It is a deliberate trade-off between natural materials and waterproofing.

“I get too hot, I sweat at night”

Overheating at night is a question of regulation, not just thickness. The HeiQ Smart Temp™ finish activates when your body temperature rises: it draws moisture to the surface of the fabric to speed up evaporation. The bed stays cooler and drier, while benefiting from waterproof protection on five sides.

That is the choice of Thermo.

Three things to check before you buy

  • The depth of your mattress. A fitted-sheet mattress protector must cover the full depth. Measure your mattress before choosing the size.
  • The skirts. Stretchy cotton skirts keep the protector firmly in place night after night — that is what prevents creases and slipping by morning.
  • Care. All Serenis protectors can be washed at up to 60 °C, without fabric softener, bleach or chlorine, and dried gently.

Still unsure?

Our retailers know the range and can let you feel the materials — often the best way to decide. You can also write to us directly: we will point you towards the protector that suits your situation.
