Why wash your mattress protector before first use?
It is the question we are asked most often, and the answer fits in one sentence: yes, you should wash your mattress protector before using it. Here is why, and how to do it properly.
Why that first wash matters
A new textile has come off a production line, out of packaging and through transport. The first wash does three things.
It cleans. It removes residues from handling and storage, even in a manufacturing chain as controlled as ours.
It softens. The fibres relax and take on their final feel. A cotton molleton in particular becomes noticeably softer after its first time in the machine.
It stabilises. The fabric settles into its working size. That matters for a fitted-sheet protector, which has to follow the depth of the mattress precisely.
How to wash it
- 60 °C maximum. That is the reference temperature for the whole Serenis range.
- A mild detergent, and nothing else. No fabric softener: it leaves a film on the fibres and reduces exactly what you expect from a mattress protector — its ability to absorb. No bleach or chlorine: they attack technical finishes and membranes.
- Gentle drying, or line drying, which we recommend. Too much heat wears out waterproof membranes.
- No ironing, no dry cleaning.
And after that, how often?
A wash every four to six weeks is enough for everyday use. More often in the case of heavy sweating, a child's room or allergies.
A useful note about Protect: its BI-OME® antibacterial treatment is built into the fibre and stays effective for up to 40 washes at 60 °C. Washing does not wear it out prematurely — it is part of how it is meant to be used.
The right habit
Wash, dry, fit. Five minutes of attention at the start for a protector that will last for years: our products are guaranteed for ten years against manufacturing defects, and proper care is part of what makes that lifespan possible.
